Centered around taking action for equality and raising awareness against bias, International Women’s Day 2020 sees a number of missions celebrating women’s achievements.

For Ida Rosette Ocampo, Chief Officer, Administration at the Barangka Credit Cooperative in Marikina City, Philippines and Global Women’s Leadership Network Sister Society leader of the Barangka Credit Cooperative, her journey celebrating women’s achievements began when she attended the 2017 World Credit Union Conference in Vienna, Austria.

Listen to Ida Rosette Ocampo share her journey in the credit union sphere and her involvement with GWLN to advance women in leadership.

How did you get involved with GWLN?

As part of the continuing education and development program of our cooperative for employees, I was favorably endorsed together with a fellow colleague by our President & CEO Roberto Mascariña to attend the 2017 World Credit Union Conference. Primarily, the objective of the program is to enhance and improve our competencies as young emerging leaders of our credit union, and to advance our skills and knowledge in our professional field with a global perspective.

Through the World Council of Credit Union’s (WOCCU) learning opportunity for developing credit union leaders like us from the Philippines, we were exposed to greater opportunities to engage and advance women in leadership by getting involved with the Global Women’s Leadership Network (GWLN).

Why did you get involved with GWLN?

Because we see the need to continue balancing, empowering and advancing women leadership in credit unions, where growth and progress are essential tools to nurture with potential to transform and change lives of others through volunteerism.

We believe that GWLN is a strong network to mentor and strengthen women toward professional development, leadership and service to the general membership, particularly in our community.

How has this helped you with your credit union/cooperative?

GWLN motivated and provided us with valuable knowledge and global experiences in building a strong network of women leaders, and in creating balance and mutual opportunities, not only for women, but for men as well in credit union management and governance.

This network made our credit union fully recognize our purpose in securing gender balance in governance, encouraging youth in coop leadership and in strengthening the impact of coop branding to advance the efforts of the local shoe industry in our community.

Have you seen the impact of women in your region?

When we launched our local sister society in our community, we were able to strengthen the level of awareness of women empowerment among female employees and leaders, and foster a stronger recognition and appreciation of men toward building mutual partnerships and collaborative efforts to support leadership and involvement of women in cooperative progress and community development.

What would you like to continue doing going forward?

As an advocate for GWLN, we look forward to (1) empower and balance coop women and men leaders in governance; (2) continue to empower women members in building financial capability opportunities, entrepreneurship, growth and wealth; (3) encourage and involve the youth toward cooperative leadership; and (4) continue to strengthen coop branding to advance the efforts of the local shoe industry in our community.

International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 and this year’s theme is #EachforEqual.

For all engaged and connected to GWLN, International Women’s Day goes way beyond one day of celebration.

GWLN membership is open to all women and men in the credit union industry. To learn more, visit GWLN, donate or connect on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.
